Deconditioning or Disensitization
One of the biggest issues with anxiety and panic is the fear of another attack. This fear can be strong enough to keep a person in their home for years. While this is extreme, the situation is not uncommon.
The problem is that the brain associates an attack with the circumstances that surrounded the first occurrence. Say you had an attack on the subway, the brain will start to associate subways with the possibility of having an attack. So that a subway ride could very well start an attack.
